Understanding Nerve Pain & Sciatica

Nerve pain (neuropathic pain) arises from damage or dysfunction in the nervous system and can manifest as sharp, shooting, or burning sensations. Sciatica is a specific form of nerve pain involving the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down each leg. It often causes a radiating discomfort in the buttock and leg, sometimes accompanied by tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. Common causes include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or compression of the sciatic nerve roots.

How We Diagnose

At Wessex Pain Clinic, our doctor-led team undertakes a thorough evaluation, beginning with a detailed medical history to pinpoint when and how symptoms started, as well as any associated risk factors. If needed, we assess muscle strength, reflexes, and sensory responses through a physical examination.

Diagnostic tests—such as MRI—may help identify structural issues like disc herniations or nerve root compression. In some cases, electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies give deeper insight into nerve function, enabling us to confirm the source of your pain.

Medications

Over-the-counter analgesics (e.g., paracetamol or NSAIDs) may help manage mild discomfort. For moderate to severe nerve pain, we may prescribe anticonvulsants or certain antidepressants that specifically target neuropathic pain pathways.

Interventional Procedures
Epidural steroid injections or nerve blocks can help reduce inflammation and interrupt pain signals. In some chronic cases, radiofrequency ablation or spinal cord stimulation (SCS) may be considered to provide longer-lasting relief.
Physical Therapy
Specific exercises and stretches improve flexibility, strengthen supporting muscles, and reduce pressure on affected nerves. Posture correction and ergonomic adjustments are crucial in preventing flare-ups.
Lifestyle & Supportive Approaches
Maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in low-impact activities (walking or swimming), and using hot/cold therapy can alleviate symptoms. Techniques like mindfulness, relaxation exercises, or acupuncture may further complement traditional treatments.
We tailor our treatments to the root cause of your nerve pain or sciatica, offering a combination of medical, interventional, and supportive therapies:
