Understanding Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy refers to pain and other symptoms caused by irritation or compression of a nerve root in the neck (cervical spine). These nerves travel from the spinal cord into the shoulders, arms, and hands — so when one becomes pinched or inflamed, it can lead to pain radiating down the arm, often accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Sharp or burning pain radiating from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Pins and needles or altered sensation in the fingers
  • Muscle weakness or loss of coordination in the arm or hand
  • Neck stiffness or restricted movement

Common causes include disc prolapse (slipped disc), age-related wear of the spine (spondylosis), or facet joint changes that narrow the space around the nerve. Because nerve compression can mimic other shoulder or arm problems, expert evaluation is essential to identify the true cause and prevent long-term nerve irritation.

Wessex Pain Clinic

How We Diagnose

At Wessex Pain Clinic, assessment begins with a detailed medical history and careful examination to determine which nerve root may be affected. We assess posture, movement, and neurological signs such as reflexes and muscle strength. Imaging studies — typically MRI scans — are used to visualise the spinal discs, joints, and nerves.

Lifestyle and Complementary Therapies

Recovery often involves improving neck movement, posture, and muscle control through physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises. Hydrotherapy can be valuable for gentle mobility and pain relief. Our partner pain psychologists support patients in managing chronic pain, stress, and sleep disturbance. We take a multidisciplinary approach, ensuring medical, physical, and psychological aspects are fully addressed.

At Wessex Pain Clinic, we work as a team and meet regularly to discuss complex, treatment resistant or unusual cases. As such you will often receive the expertise of several pain consultants. We believe that we are one of very few pain clinics to offer this.

Medications
Depending on the cause and severity, we may use anti-inflammatory medicines, neuropathic pain medications (such as gabapentin or pregabalin). Stronger pain relief may be prescribed under consultant supervision, with ongoing review to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Interventional Procedures
When pain remains troublesome, image-guided cervical nerve root blocks can reduce inflammation and calm the irritated nerve. In resistant or complex cases, we collaborate closely with expert spinal surgeons for potential surgical procedures where appropriate.
Our approach combines medical expertise, interventional pain management, and rehabilitative care. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, aiming to relieve pain, restore function, and prevent recurrence.
