Understanding Orofacial Pain

Orofacial pain refers to persistent pain felt in the face, mouth, or jaw, arising from the teeth, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), muscles, or cranial nerves. It can range from dull aching discomfort to sharp, electric shock–like pain, and may be constant or intermittent. Burning Mouth syndrome is also sometimes included in this group.

Because many different structures in the face and head share overlapping nerve pathways, orofacial pain can be challenging to diagnose. It may result from dental problems, nerve irritation (such as trigeminal neuralgia), jaw joint dysfunction (TMJ disorder), muscle tension, or even neck and postural strain.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Pain in the jaw, cheeks, mouth, or around the eyes
  • Pain triggered by chewing, speaking, or touching the face
  • Clicking, locking, or stiffness in the jaw joint
  • Burning, tingling, or numbness in the face or tongue
  • Headache or neck pain associated with jaw movement

Because orofacial pain often involves multiple overlapping conditions, assessment by a multidisciplinary pain specialist ensures accurate diagnosis and comprehensive care.

Wessex Pain Clinic

How We Diagnose

At Wessex Pain Clinic, we carry out a detailed clinical history and examination, focusing on pain location, triggers, and related symptoms such as jaw movement or dental sensitivity.

Diagnostic tools may include MRI or CT imaging.

Wessex Pain Clinic
Lifestyle and Complementary Therapies

By combining medical, physical, and psychological expertise, we aim to restore comfort, function, and quality of life.

At Wessex Pain Clinic, we work as a team and meet regularly to discuss complex, treatment resistant or unusual cases. As such you will often receive the expertise of several pain consultants. We believe that we are one of very few pain clinics to offer this.

Medications
We may prescribe:
  •  Anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) for muscle or joint pain
  • Neuropathic pain agents (such as carbamazepine, pregabalin, gabapentin, or amitriptyline) for nerve-related pain
  • Muscle relaxants if muscle tension or spasm is a major component
  • Topical treatments for localised pain or burning mouth symptoms
Interventional Procedures

Depending on the cause, we offer precise nerve blocks or joint injections, including:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injections with corticosteroid or botox.
  • Trigeminal nerve blocks or pulsed radiofrequency treatment for neuralgic facial pain
  • Trigger point injections for muscle-based or referred facial pain

Our consultants may also coordinate with oral surgeons or maxillofacial specialists where dental or structural treatment is required.

Our care for orofacial pain is multidisciplinary and highly individualised, combining medical therapy, interventional techniques, physiotherapy, and psychological support.
