Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a well-established medical treatment for certain types of chronic muscle and nerve-related pain. At Wessex Pain Clinic, our consultant pain specialists provide Botox injections for pain management for patients across Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Dorset, Berkshire, Wiltshire and the South of England, with clinics in Winchester, Southampton, Basingstoke and Chichester.
Botox is a purified protein that works by blocking the release of chemicals involved in nerve transmission, particularly those responsible for muscle contraction and pain communication. When used in pain management, Botox is injected into targeted muscles or tissues to reduce spasm, overactivity, or nerve sensitivity.
The procedure is highly individualised â your consultant will determine the precise injection sites based on your symptoms, examination, and diagnosis. The effects are not immediate; it typically takes 7â14 days for benefits to begin, with effects lasting up to 3â4 months. The aim is that once the botox wears off, pain signalling is less prominent, and an overall reduced pain is experienced.

Botox injections are performed as a short outpatient procedure. Youâll lie or sit comfortably depending on the injection site. Your consultant will clean the area and use anatomical landmarks or ultrasound to guide the injection precisely.
Most injections are well tolerated and take just a few minutes. You may be advised to rest briefly afterwards and can usually return to normal activity the same day. The full benefit may take 1â2 weeks to develop.

Driving advice: You should not drive that day if receiving any sedation. Our procedures do vary on whether they are possible to drive home from yourself, please seek advice from your consultant about driving advice. If you are seeing us for an injection and planning on driving, please check with us beforehand about whether it will be possible to drive yourself home afterwards.
