Greater Trochanteric Bursa Injection

Greater Trochanteric Bursa Injection

A greater trochanteric bursa injection is used to treat pain on the outside of the hip, often diagnosed as greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) or trochanteric bursitis. The procedure involves injecting medication — typically a local anaesthetic and corticosteroid — into the inflamed bursa to reduce pain and allow better movement.

How the Procedure Works

The greater trochanter is the prominent bony point on the outside of the hip. Overlying this bone is a fluid-filled sac called the bursa, which cushions the area between the bone and surrounding tendons. When the bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it can lead to persistent pain during walking, lying on the side, or climbing stairs.

During the procedure, your consultant uses ultrasound guidance to accurately place a needle into the bursa. A combination of local anaesthetic and steroid is injected to reduce inflammation and alleviate discomfort.

This treatment may also help distinguish bursal inflammation from other causes of lateral hip pain, such as gluteal tendonopathy.

What Conditions It Can Help With

A greater trochanteric bursa injection is often used to treat:
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS)
Trochanteric bursitis
Lateral hip pain not responding to physiotherapy
Pain aggravated by lying on the side, walking, or climbing stairs
Postural or overuse-related hip discomfort

Aimed Benefits

The injection aims to:
Reduce inflammation in the bursa and surrounding tissues
Alleviate pain in the outer hip region
Improve mobility and comfort during daily activities
Support participation in physiotherapy or rehabilitation
Relief may be immediate or take a few days to develop, depending on the degree of inflammation.

What to Expect

This is a short outpatient procedure, typically lasting 15–20 minutes. You’ll lie on your back or side while the injection site is cleaned and numbed. Using ultrasound, your consultant will guide the needle into the bursa and deliver the medication.

The injection is usually well tolerated. You may be advised to avoid strenuous activity for a day or two, then gradually return to normal movement and rehabilitation.

Risks and Considerations

All procedures carry some risks, which will be discussed in detail with you during your consultation. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, and formal consent will always be obtained before any procedure is carried out.

Combined Approach / Multidisciplinary Care

At Wessex Pain Clinic we find that the best results come from combining medical treatments with active rehabilitation. Procedures are often most effective when paired with physiotherapy, movement-based exercise, and — where appropriate — psychological support. This comprehensive approach addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of pain and supports longer-term improvement.
