Interlaminar Epidural Injection

An interlaminar epidural injection is a procedure used to deliver anti-inflammatory medication into the epidural space of the spine. It is designed to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain that may be radiating from compressed or irritated spinal nerves, often in the neck, mid-back, or lower back.

How the Procedure Works

The spine contains a space called the epidural space, which surrounds the spinal cord and nerve roots. In certain conditions, this space can become inflamed or compressed, causing pain, tingling, or weakness.

During an interlaminar epidural injection, a consultant in pain medicine carefully places a needle between the bony arches (laminae) of the vertebrae to access the epidural space. A corticosteroid — often combined with a local anaesthetic — is then injected to reduce inflammation and soothe the irritated nerves. This is done under X-ray (fluoroscopic) or ultrasound guidance to ensure precise placement.

This procedure may be helpful for:

Sciatica or leg pain caused by nerve root compression

Lumbar or cervical radiculopathy (nerve irritation)

Spinal stenosis

Disc bulges or herniation

Chronic low back or neck pain with nerve involvement

What to Expect

This is typically an outpatient procedure lasting 20–30 minutes. You’ll lie in a comfortable position, and the skin will be numbed with local anaesthetic. The injection is given under image guidance to ensure accuracy. In most cases, sedation is offered.

You will usually be monitored for a short time afterwards and can go home the same day, with advice on activity levels and aftercare. Temporary numbness or heaviness in the legs may be experienced for a few hours if local anaesthetic is used.

All procedures carry some risks, which will be discussed in detail with you during your consultation. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, and formal consent will always be obtained before any procedure is carried out.
